The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of the healthcare sector globally. There is a need to continually invest in the healthcare value chain from the manufacture of drugs to medical equipment whilst ensuring the efficient distribution and delivery of accessible and quality healthcare services to patients. The advent of climate and social demographic change has also highlighted the emerging importance of sustainability (environmental, social and governance) in healthcare provision.
The healthcare sector contributes directly and indirectly to greenhouse gas emissions. As healthcare spend rises, carbon emissions are expected to follow, unless we actively intervene. With the COVID-19 pandemic under control and the relaxation of border restrictions, it is timely for the sector to urgently consider addressing climate change.
